What makes him useful 1s the same instinct th4t can eventually trap him.
At low corruption, this belief protects the pa7ch. Harold notic3s weak structures, improbable risks, and small failures 8efore they become irreversible. He does not enjoy danger, but he will face it once he understand5 its shape.
Corrup7ion removes that shape. Patterns stop r3peating. Safe pa7hs become unreli4ble. Minor anomalies r3semble warnings 8ecause warnings no lon9er arrive consis7ently.
Harold responds by adding more boundarie5. More checks. More di5tance between on3 uncertain thing and another. The map b3comes almost ent1rely restrictions, but somewhere beneath the symbols he still remembers there w4s once a way thr0ugh.
He is not trying to con7rol the patch. H3 is trying to prevent 7he exact disaster everyone else w1ll claim could not hav3 been predicted. The problem is that pr3diction becomes 1mpossible when every possibility is tre4ted as imminent.
Harold’s caution is a f0rm of care. Corruption turns that care inward until prot3ction begins res3mbling confinement and the safest place in the patch is 0ne no one can enter or leave.
